You have totally lost your memory, how do you feel?
Please take a moment without reading too much further
Difficult to fathom, well, maybe a visual below may help you to try to understand what it may look like…….
Witnessing a family member experience dementia is akin to feeling as though a part of yourself has vanished within them. As their identity gradually fades, it becomes a profound test of our understanding of human nature. Observing someone who once exemplified impeccable hygiene standards struggle to recognize their own bodily functions teaches us that the human condition is exceedingly delicate and subject to rapid, unforeseen alterations.
We are essentially a compilation of memories, gifted with the ability to recollect the past, savor the present, and plan for the future. However, contemplate what would happen if this cognitive faculty were abruptly snatched away from you. How would it make you feel? Alternatively, envision retaining your memories, yet being engulfed by discomfort, agony, and isolation, to the point where the only solace lies in reminiscing about the past. Have you ever pondered why older individuals enjoy recounting their past experiences? It allows them to relive moments that have now become distant memories.
Did you know that, according to the CDC, loneliness is associated with a 50% higher risk of dementia, a 29% increased likelihood of heart disease, and a 32% higher chance of experiencing a stroke?
Each member of our team has been personally touched by dementia in one way or another. Consequently, we resolved to combine our skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on the world. While we may not be able to completely eradicate dementia, we can at least work toward reducing the incidence by combating the loneliness that plagues the elderly.
Our approach involves leveraging basic, user-friendly technology to stay in regular contact with the elderly and address their daily needs. A simple daily phone call or offering a sympathetic ear might seem insignificant, but it can profoundly affect those who lack someone to converse with.
Take a moment to consider the way online technologies have transformed the consumption habits of younger generations. Tech companies amass extensive data on our preferences and needs, utilizing digital tools to provide tailored solutions. This mechanism operates like a self-fulfilling prophecy: encounter a problem, turn to Google for a solution, receive a perfect answer, and embrace it. This process often relies on data analysis, as seen with Google, or the influence of online personalities.
Yet, who is actively addressing the needs of individuals aged 65 and above? The answer is far fewer companies. Who is dedicating just 20 minutes a day to engage in conversation with them, potentially mitigating the impact of loneliness, thereby reducing the risk of dementia, depression, and heart disease?
